As an industry professional, by now you are aware that the EPA issued a rule on April 22, 2008, requiring the use of lead-safe practices to prevent lead poisoning. Under that rule, effective April 22, 2010, contractors who perform renovation, repair, and painting services on projects that disturbs lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools that were built before 1978 MUST be certified and must follow specific work practices in order to prevent lead contamination. Most importantly, the EPA requires that these firms, as well as independent contractors (i.e. trades, sole proprietor) must use certified renovators who completed training from an EPA-Approved accredited trainer and received the EPA RRP Certificate - AND - also must become certified ("Certified Firm") by the EPA.
In order to meet those requirements:
(1) You must locate an EPA-Approved accredited training provider, register for the required EPA RRP (Renovate, Repair and Painting) Initial Course (English or Spanish) course, successfully complete the course & receive the Certificate;
THEN,
(2) You MUST complete and submit the EPA's Certified Firm Application (http://www.epa.gov/lead/pubs/firmapp.pdf) -AND- submit Application FEE to become a Certified Firm.
